The HKBU Foundation records with deep sadness and sorrow the passing of Dr. the Hon. Tin Ka Ping, GBM, MBE, Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences (1996) of HKBU and Honorary Trustee of the HKBU Foundation, on 10 July 2018. He was 99 years old.

A prominent industrialist and a visionary philanthropist, Dr. Tin was the Chairman of the Tin’s Chemical Industrial Company. He was greatly admired in Hong Kong for his many charitable deeds. He actively supported charitable causes, financing many social welfare projects.

An advocate of education, Dr. Tin believed that the future of China lies in education. Following his vision of “from the society, for the society” and “benefit future generations”, he set up Tin Ka Ping Foundation in 1982. Countless schools, hospitals and charities in Hong Kong and on the Mainland benefitted from his philanthropy.

Dr. Tin was highly respected for his longstanding and remarkable contributions to the overall development of HKBU through the Tin Ka Ping Foundation. A staunch supporter of HKBU since 1997, Dr. Tin made generous donations in support of a variety of endeavours of the University, including the HKBU Development Fund, the establishment of the Tin Ka Ping Education Endowment Fund, the Tin Ka Ping Foundation – HKBU Mainland China Visiting Scholar Programme, the Hong Kong Creative Drama Festival, the 4E Whole Person Servant Leadership Programme as well as various conference series and our institutional advancement at large.

In recognition of his notable contributions, Dr. Tin was awarded an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by Her Majesty the Queen and a Grand Bauhinia Medal by the HKSAR Government in 1996 and 2010 respectively. He also received honorary degrees from universities in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. In addition, Zijinshan Astronomical Observatory of China named an asteroid in his honour and he earned the epithet “China’s Philanthropist”.

The University delegation led by Professor Roland T. Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor, visited the Tins Enterprises Centre to express its deepest condolences to Dr. Tin’s family and representatives of the Tin Ka Ping Foundation on 19 July 2018. On behalf of HKBU, President Chin and Dr. Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning), also attended the memorial service for Dr. Tin on 20 July 2018 to pay our last tribute to Dr. Tin, who will always be remembered for his ardent support and distinguished contributions to the University.
