In Memoriam: Professor Deng Tietao

HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Professor Deng Tietao, Honorary Doctor of Science (2001) of HKBU and Honorary Professor in the School of Chinese Medicine, donor of the University, on 10 January 2019. He was 104 years old.

Professor Deng is universally acknowledged as a monumental and indispensable figure in the development and history of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the 20th century, and he is particularly well-known as “The Grand Master of TCM in China”. His life-long contribution to TCM teaching, research and clinical service have had a significant impact on the development of TCM in modern China.

Professor Deng served on numerous high-level committees in the national government and the Ministry of Public Health. He also published extensively during his career, winning numerous provincial and national awards, prizes and honours for his original research and monographs.

A long-time supporter of our School of Chinese Medicine, Professor Deng made generous donations in support of the inheritance and innovation of a Chinese medicine project in 2006. In 2016, Professor Deng donated a collection of valuable books on Chinese medicine to support the teaching, research and clinical endeavours of the School in 2016.

The Foundation convey its deepest condolences to Professor Deng’s family at this time of bereavement. Professor Deng will always be remembered for his invaluable contribution to the University and TCM sector.
